Testosterone Replacement Therapy in the UK
In 30 seconds...
Testosterone replacement therapy is the replacement of low testosterone levels in men who are experiencing symptoms. The aim is to improve these symptoms by increasing the testosterone available in the body. This is usually achieved with creams, gels or injections. Testosterone is a hormone responsible for male sexual characteristics. It also affects mood, muscle and bone growth and libido. Male testosterone levels are dropping each decade, averages and normal levels are often inaccurate leading to less diagnosis of low testosterone. TRT can have huge benefits in all areas of your life but does come with some potential side effects.
Options for Testosterone replacement therapy in the UK
Testosterone replacement therapy is the replacement of testosterone using medication to improve a man’s levels and resolve their symptoms.
It is usually provided by specialist doctors who can monitor and control any side effects that may occur.
Typical treatment options include gels, creams, patches and injectables (the most effective option).
HCG may be used alongside testosterone replacement therapy ( also known as TRT) to maintain a man’s natural testosterone production, improve fertility and maintain other hormonal pathways.
Low Testosterone Test
The ADAM questionnaire has been shown to have 88% sensitivity in testing for low testosterone.
How does Testosterone Replacement Therapy Work?
The medication releases testosterone into the body, and this is absorbed into the blood and transported around the body.
In gels and creams the testosterone is absorbed through the skin. With injections the testosterone is injected straight into the muscle or adipose tissue (e.g. belly fat), which then releases into the bloodstream.
The body can then use this testosterone as it would with naturally produced testosterone.
How long do I take Testosterone Replacement Therapy for?
Testosterone replacement therapy is usually a life long treatment.
This is because it replaces your own production with higher levels. If you stop taking it, your levels drop again, bringing back the symptoms.
If you take HCG alongside TRT then it is easier to stop treatment and bring back your previous levels – but you will still have symptoms in most cases as testosterone levels will still be at your previous low level.
Benefits of Testosterone Replacement Therapy
There are lots of different benefits that men notice when starting TRT.
The most common ones are:
- Improved sex drive
- Muscle growth
- Improved mental clarity
- Improved mood
- Improved energy levels
- More assertiveness
- Better erection quality
You can read more about this on our ‘Benefits of TRT’ page.
Where can I get Testosterone Replacement Therapy in the UK?
There are 3 main options for getting Testosterone Replacement Therapy in the UK.
- The NHS
- Online pharmacies
- Private medical clinics
The plus side is that the NHS is the cheapest option. The downside is that treatment can be hard to get, the process is slow, and often you will either not receive any treatment or the treatment is poor quality. Treatment is also frequently removed completely due to a raised haematocrit or testosterone levels being higher than expected.
These pharmacies can supply gels only. You will only need a testosterone test to get started but there is a lack of safety here with insufficient testing and follow up. There is rarely effective doctor support. A cheap but poor alternative to a specialist clinic.
Private medical companies:
There are several clinics in the UK providing TRT. Some remain stuck in the past, and only provide gels or nebido. Others (such as Optimale) have moved to secure better medication options such as enanthate and cypionate alongside HCG.
These clinics will usually provide good testing and follow up with specialist doctors. Protocols and costs can vary between clinics.
Testosterone test kits
Order an at-home test kit to get started.
What is the Process of getting Testosterone Replacement Therapy in the UK?
The regulations state that doctors and clinics require two sets of low testosterone results as well as certain markers to ensure patients are safe to start treatment.
If you have symptoms of low testosterone then the first step is to get a test to see if testosterone levels are low, we recommend this test which can be done at home.
If results are low then you can move to the more comprehensive enhanced testosterone blood test.
Following these tests, we can book in a consultation with one of our specialist doctors to review your results and prescribe medication.
